Educational Opportunities for Children and Young Adults Preschool/Kindergarten Class The Preschool/Kindergarten class follows the Living the Good News curriculum. This lectionary-based curriculum is designed to enrich the children's understanding of the weekly Gospel. This is achieved through fun, games, crafts, play-acting, and folktales. Classes last from 30 to 45 minutes and provide time to allow the children to share personal stories with each other so that the children can become better acquainted. The children learn to understand who God is, to say prayer and grace, and to begin to become familiar with the Lord's Prayer and Ten Commandments. Special activities for this class include making dog treats for the SPCA and preparing for the annual Christmas pageant. Primary Class (Grades 1 - 3) Following the Living the Good News curriculum, this class builds on their earlier class experiences to explore and further their understanding of the weekly Gospel message for that day through fun activities such as artwork, crafts, music, drama and games. Emphasis is placed on "talking to God," or prayer in daily life as well as exploring and becoming familiar with the Bible. This class participates in the Christmas pageant, as well as other parish activities. Effort is made to have the children help with parish fundraising events and community outreach. Intermediary Class (Grades 4-6) These children are encouraged to explore who God is and what spirituality means to them through more discussion than they had in prior years. The Living the Good News series is used to explore Jesus’ teachings as portrayed in the Bible. Focus is mainly on the Gospel lessons and helping the children find ways of applying the teachings to their everyday lives. Fun activities such as word play games (they love hangman). role plays, puzzles, artwork are used to reinforce the lessons. The children learn to apply the Gospel teachings to their neighbor, family and community through activities such as Christmas caroling, doing home visits, and making Valentine and Easter cards for shut-in parishioners, assisting an elderly parishioner with weeding and planting flowers, and helping PACS with a major food drive. Journey to Adulthood Journey to Adulthood is a complete youth ministry program designed for the spiritual formation for young people in grades 6 through 12. The program uses Bible study, prayer, rites of passage and outreach ministries to underscore its two guiding principles, which are: Manhood and Womanhood are free gifts from God; and Adulthood must be earned. With Jesus as the model, the program seeks to examine the four areas of human existence: self, sexuality, spirituality, and society. Within the program, there are three two-year segments: Rite 13 focuses on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. J2A engages youth with the skills and critical thinking that is necessary in adulthood. At the end of this two-year segment, the youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage. In addition, Confirmation classes are held for the youth involved in this segment of the program. YAC is a mentor-based program that helps older teens carry out a ministry within the church or community. In its essence, the J2A program seeks to examine what it means to be an adult in today’s world, and how youth can make that transition. The classes meet every Sunday during the academic year, alternating between morning and evening sessions. In addition to the classes, there are service projects and fun activities offered to the youth involved in the program. |
